Parrot BeBop Drone – Your Personal Fisheye Quadcopter

Are you tired of flying drones indoors? Then maybe Parrot’s latest creation may be the next step. We tested it a bit quick on the CES show in Las Vegas earlier this year and now it can be finally found on the websites.

 The remote control range

The actual drone or Quadcopter is a fairly small and handy thing at just under 400 grams. It comes with an indoor protection in the box and extra blades.

180 degree fisheye lens up to 14 megapixels of resolution can give you quite impressive video feed. You can manage it with a tablet or mobile, but in that case, the range is limited to about 300 meters – under optimal conditions. Sky Controller extends the range to an impressive two kilometers. You get three batteries in the package.

Easy to start

To start the flight, press the lift-off button, and then Bebop Drone rises one meter from the ground and hovers smoothly until you have taken command. The sensors ensure that the drone stays in place. We experienced that Sky Controller facilitated the flight itself firmly as compared to when we used an iPad alone, the handles are comfortable and simply gives you better control. You can see a live image from the camera directly into the tablet and it is easy to rotate the camera to where you want, and start and stop recording.

The videos are stored in an internal flash memory which can hold 8 GB of data. In order to transfer these to the computer you need to either connect the drone with a USB cable (won’t with Mac), or you transfer via Wi-Fi to your computer or mobile phone.

 GPS support

Bebop Drone is quite easily flown and it lands smoothly without problems. A quick button makes it lands straight down based on the current position. Another button sets your home location. And you can even put up a flight route based on coordinates. If you lose control over the drone, there is also an emergency app to immediately turn off the engines.

The accessory Sky Controller has a hefty antenna on top which catches up the range. The images from the camcorder are very sharp and fine, and the software-based unique stabilizer works really well. There are a lot of posts in various forums where users experienced Bebop Drone went completely uncontrolled, which of course is a bit worrying, but there is nothing we experienced.
