Sore throat gives us a very tough time for even swallowing your own saliva becomes painful. You feel hungry but due to the painful sore throat you are scared to even put a morsel in your mouth.

There are various remedies besides the over the counter sore throat candies (lozenges, strepsils) and drops.

  1. The best sore throat remedy is having warm water throughout the day to soothe your throat and wash away any bacterial debris on your swollen throat.
  2. You can keep on gargling with warm water and salt as salt helps in scrubbing away the bacteria’s and germs from the throat.
  3. Doctors recommend beta-dine solution for gargling if you have a sore throat. But you should try the home remedies too.
  4. Try and stick to a liquid diet till the time you feel less irritation in your throat. As the liquids soothe the swollen skin in your throat and washes down any unwanted bacteria’s, it is also easy for you to swallow down the food. You can have any kind of clear soups, avoiding broths, as thick broths will leave a residue on the swollen throat causing to elevate the situation.
  5. Having all kinds of warm herbal tea helps in relieving the sore throat. For instance you can start you day with lemon tea, then cayenne pepper tea in mid morning, later after lunch you can have honey tea, in the evening add a dash of mint to your tea, then later you can have ginger honey tea to digest your dinner and it will help you sleep easier through the night without any irritation in your sore throat.
  6. Another good remedy is to try gargling with vodka, brandy or whisky. These alcohol beverages help in killing the unwanted bacteria’s in your swollen throat. You can even drink these hard drinks with warm water to help you sleep soundly through the night. However, please abstain from overdoing it, as it may cause dizziness due to lack of heavy food in your system to digest these hard drinks.
  7. Avoid having sweet stuff, fried stuff; acidic and spicy foods as it worsen the sore throat situation.
  8. The natural remedy for sore throat is honey. Honey has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties so it helps in relieving a sore throat.
  9. There are various Ayurveda medicines made from completely natural ingredients, hence they have no side effects. For instance the Kushal kanthil is packed with cardamom, black cumin, the outer casing of nutmeg, piper cubeb, nutmeg, edible camphor and mint leaves. This helps in soothing a sore throat.
  10. Though it is advised to stay away from dairy products; warm or hot milk with turmeric is considered a good remedy for sore throat.
  11. Steam treatment where you put some Vicks or eucalyptus oil in the hot steaming water and inhale its wafts, will help you breathe better and clear your throat. The steam will soothe your sore throat relieving some of the pain.
  12. You can use humidifiers to avoid your throat from going dry.
