As a freshman before, I really had a hard time pushing myself into the sudden change. In just a flash, I was in this new school, with new faces, and new environment to deal with. Although I have told myself long before that college might be something new and odd for me, I forgot to actually let it all sink in. That’s why I can say that the first impression that I showed everyone around me there is not quite a real good start. It’s just great that I came to regain myself eventually.

Having a good first impression to show to the people around you in college is both crucial and helpful. During your first year there, you can already be labeled with regards to how you carry yourself and communicate with others. As early as that whole first school year, you can already be one of the populars, the jerks, the geeks, or just simply the normals with somehow peaceful lives than all the others. Don’t fret, though. There are five simple ways to make your first impression last somehow.

1. Discipline Yourself and Set Your Mind

My first move when I entered college was already a wrong one. I didn’t focus and set my mind on the impending change. I didn’t prepare myself for such a big leap from high school to college. That’s why I was a bit culture shocked. So for your own good, don’t follow my footsteps. As early as now, regardless if you have a school in mind already, or you still haven’t completely planned anything yet, start setting up your mind that you’re going to college and you have to be versatile and ready for some big changes. Aside from that, commence self-disciplining. It will help you big time.

2. Do Something Extraordinary and Out of Your Zone

Since change is impending, try doing something extraordinary for you to be able to accept changes and be out of your comfort zone. High school and home town are both comfort zones, but college isn’t. So start doing things that will make you stretch your limits and learn something new. These things are what college holds for you, and these things are the firsts of what you need to deal with when you’re not prepared for it.

3. But Bite What Only You Can Chew

Although it is good to test your limits, especially when you’re already in college, you still have to remember to only do what you think you can and learn to say NO sometimes. If it’s already a seemingly deadly or dangerous thing for you, there’s no shame in backing down. Do something in order to get on the good side of other people but always remember to bite what only you can chew or you’ll choke to death.

4. Write to Your Journal/Diary

College is a good ground for you to write a journal or diary. This can help you cope up, maintain your consistency, and remember your own self. When I was in college, this helped me when I was stuck in a rut and turned my situation around. When I started to write, I didn’t only produced my best essays and articles for academic purposes, I was able to regain my personality and create a new impression to my schoolmates. Writing can be your best friend in college.

5. Last but Not the Least, BE YOURSELF

Don’t ever forget who you really are. Don’t let college, your new found friends, and even your terror professors take away your values, principles and everything that you stand up for. For you to never have a hard time taking care of your precious reputation and even first impression, go to college and start your very first day there without being pathetic and pretentious. Just study and make new friends. Remember that college is just a phase of life, it’s not a way of living.
